Disturbia, fiction, family, friends, and everything else between the lions.

People showing up at town halls across this country are not being paid, coaxed, or brain-washed to be there.

First of all, what all powerful organization could accomplish such a thing?  Now that's a great conspiracy theory!

Second, the people at these town hall meetings don't appear to be anyone's lackey.  How insulting to believe Americans are so easily bought, led, and basically told what to do.  I do however, think a lot of them are there more out of a general dissatisfaction with Washington than with the health care issue.  But whatever, at least they're PRESENT.

Have you seen the dumbfounded look on the faces of politicians confronted with constituents back home?  Frankly, their wide-eyed slack jawed shock says more about American apathy than it does the issue.

Elected officials aren't generally stupid.  They know people disagree with them politically and on individual issues.  The jaw drop and trembling hands aren't because people disagree with them, though it may seem that way at first glance, it's the fact PEOPLE SHOWED UP.

In my travails as a reporter, I covered my share of elected officials, both local and national, from city councils to congressional town halls.  The one common theme at all these public events?  Few, if any, citizens bothered to show up.  Frankly, most of the time the press and political entourage were the only people in the room.  Sure, people have lives, some even go so far as to trust the media to watch the government for them and report any nefarious activity.

Ha.

Ha. Ha. Ha.

So when Joe Normal shows up in mass, yeah, elected officials are dumbfounded.  Not because Joe Normal disagrees with policy, but because Joe Normal isn't Joe Apathetic anymore.  How does a politician deal with Joe Engaged?

Is it even possible for politics to remain the same in a country when Joe Engaged remains engaged past an election?

And what about the media?  What started as a noble watchdog profession, a profession diligently dedicated to protecting all Americans from potential government and commercial abuse, has stalwartly chosen political teams.  You can't be an umpire when standing at bat.

Will Joe Engaged recognize the watchdog is now the lapdog?  Where will the backlash leave that particular puppy?  Out in the cold?

A few thoughts for Joe Engaged, the media, and elected officials to ponder on this new playing field:

What works:

People getting together to support or show dissent for elected representatives/policy in open meetings.

Americans being involved in the democratic process.

Allowing each person the opportunity to speak and be heard (as time and space allow).

The Golden Rule

What doesn't work:

The media labeling dissenters "plants."

People losing control in public venues.  Screaming and chanting may have a place in demonstrations, not so much in group settings where information is trying to be given and gathered.

Elected representatives "fighting back" against the public

I'm reporting you to flag@whitehouse.gov right now, Tova.  You Nazi scumbag.  Don't you understand that nationalized healthcare is what Americans need?  Whether they want it or not?  Rules, schmules - disagreement is to be slapped down and crushed the instant it appears.

[/sarcasm - just in case]

I'm skeered.  Though it probably won't do my career any good....(talking the public administration one, not the journalism one).

And just for the record, I think health care is a debate we NEED to have since it will affect every single one of us.  No to mention an alienated elected official can do quite a bit of damage before being removed from office..buwahahah...seriously, I'd like to see it debated intelligently from both sides because just when I think I have a handle on what it means, it changes.

Don't worry, Tova.  When this administration really wants our opinions, it will beat them out of us (to paraphrase a comment I read elsewhere today).

Now THAT would be FUN and honest.

Oh, and one other thing for the list: Don't 'Attack America'.  By that I mean doing things like passing out little Gadsden flags.  That's heavy shit, man, and will get your ass whupped.

One of the SEIU thugs who assaulted the 'flag man' in St. Louis said exactly that - "He attacked America."  So don't go bein' all patriotic & shit or you're goin' down.

We live in interesting times.  Just a year or so ago we were being thrashed in the news with detailed stories of how Bush and his lackies were trashing the civil liberties of our precious citizens.  Now that those precious citizens are not rolling over and playing dead for the pols, they have labeled us thugs and lackies and tools of the big conspiracy.  SCROOM!  And the current admin are running those precious rights into the mud.

And for the record...the "Health Care" bill is not about health care, something (one of the few somethings) that is not broken in this country.  It is about who administers that care and making a mistake at this point in that arena could well destroy the best health care system in the world.

Back in the old "pickle-suit" days, we used to say, " The beatings will continue until the morale improves!!"  Seems to be the current admin's motto, huh?

I watched that video D...and talk about alternate reality.  The union guy?  The "reverend" is shown beating on the flag-guy, but now is suing flag-guy for a broken shoulder!

That is just so UNION!  Pick a fight, get injured, sue the victim and then claim disability insurance too....UNION!  Oh and don't let little things like the whole thing being CAUGHT ON TAPE distract from easy potential money.

What a goob.

I hope not.  I love this country and want to see it prosper.  I don't understand why the gov just doesn't open a free hospital in every city if they want to pay for it so bad.  Let all the people who have no insurance go to the free hospital (I know there are already plenty of them out there) and be treated and otherwise, keep healthcare the way it is.

Why does it have to be such a BIG change?  I don't get that.

Have you seen these?

They're GREAT!

Here's a great piece (& video) on the character of the 'mobs' and the insulting dismissiveness of the traditional media and many of our elected representatives, from C-SPAN no less.

Want to go off-topic for just a second.  Want to thank you for turning me on to Mr. Doss.  I read "Dead Soul" and started "Stone Butterfly".  I like the characters, and even though the the dialogue is just a hair below too much, I love it.  Since the stories take place practically in my back yard, that makes it fun, too.

Oh yeah!  That makes my day BFD!  I really do like him....when you say the dialog is almost too much, do you mean actual dialog or narrative?

I read kinda fast, so long detailed narratives keep all my cylinders firing...unless they're Stephen King long, and then my mind wanders haha....Let me know what ya think of Stonebutterfly!

I thought the end was really complicated to unravel, but I am fairly "new" to the whole mystery genre.

Wow, I can't believe C-span let her speak....

You know I listened to OB Wan today....and you know what?  He hasn't read the bill either!! ahahahahaha...he was directly contradicting some of the wording in the bill.

The conversations between the characters borders on cutesy...but it is clever.  Picked up a few expressions that may find their way into common usage here.  The narrative is clean and clear and moves without getting bogged down in descriptive.  I like that.  When I have to wade through three pages of how the morning air smells...I'm gone.  Word pictures are hard to paint and the easiest way is to rely on common stuff to help.  He does that very well. At least, familiar to anyone who has spent any time in the southwest and especially southwest Colorado.   Dead Souls was a better read, to me, but Stone Butterfly was a good read and a good story.  I don't like the contrived suspense...I knew the Shurf didn't shoot Charlie...how could you kill off the main character with four chapters left to go?  But then, he killed off the priest so who knows.  But the pluses far outnumber the minuses and the next trip to the library, probably tomorrow, will include at least two more of his stories.  So thanks, T...good stuff.
