Disturbia, fiction, family, friends, and everything else between the lions.

In September, Greenville Ohio, a ten year old boy started a fire in his family's duplex.

The fire killed his mom and little sister.  Not content with two lives, the fire leeched into the neighbors home and devoured the life of three little souls.  Their mom escaped.

The ten year old pyromaniac lost his step-dad to AIDS last summer.  There is no mention of his biological dad.

The single mother next door, who lost her three children, moved into the duplex from a homeless shelter some time ago.  I'm not judging but I have questions.  How does a mother escape and leave three children to burn to death?  Was the fire so hot and right outside her door she didn't have any choice?  I have to believe it was so.  What about the two adult friends she let sleep over who also escaped?  Did they think to check on the children before running out into the night to escape the smoke?

Three children.  THREE.  Three little lives, with little fingers, little feet, and bellies full of laughter.

It's tragic.

It's razor edges and odd angles and won't fit into a "Don't want to think about it" box in my head.

A judge is deciding if the ten year old boy is competent to stand trial.  Stand trial for murder.

How can a ten year old stand trial for his life?

I think of my son at ten.  He was mature for his age.  He knew fire hurts and could kill, but the whole dying concept didn't mean a lot to him.  He couldn't always be depended on to bypass his desire for pleasure over the consequences to other people.

Whether the kid is sent to jail for the rest of his life or not, he's as dead in most ways as the children fire devoured.  The ashes of his future just haven't blown away yet.

The fire happened in September and people aren't really talking about it anymore.  Seem almost resentful when an article runs in the paper with updates to the case.

Some think the public's attitude is racial.  The families were poor, the single mother had three black children, and the white widow's dead husband was a black man with AIDS.

Me.  I think it has more to do with the box in people's heads.  The box which gets closed, taped up, and stored in the cavern of forgetfulness with the million other boxes just like it.  It's not comfortable to brave the stacks and pry the box open to put in new information.  It reminds us there are things hidden away in dark places, things we can't focus on and maintain our sanity.  Things the cavern must devour as surely as the fire devoured the lives of those children.

Ten.  Years.  Old.

What to do?  What to do?

This is so sad Tonya, so sad!  I can't imagine and won't judge either why the mom got out and the kids didn't.  I'm sure that must have been tough! I can't imagine myself getting out before my kids, although easier said than done!

10 years old.....his life....how and why did he get to this....the mom in me wants to hug him, tell him off, the other side of the coin is...where does he go from here?  He deserves to be punished but in a way that will turn his life around, there's always a way to save someone like this.  Hopefully he gets that chance.

How awful.  How tragic.  It sounds like that 10 year old was doomed from the start being abandoned by the men in his life and now this attention getting child will have to pay big time.

I'm sure glad I didn't have to pay with my life for the mistakes I made as a child.  Granted no one lost their life but could have.  I remember starting a fire outside in our yard along a row of bushes and trees next to a fence which got quickly out of control.  The next door neighbor who just so happened to be out watering his lawn quickly doused the spreading flames.  I still remember the panic as the flames grew by leaps and bounds.

I too, looking back must have used this as a release from what was going on in my home life.  But thank God, my dad took care of things when he got home.  Never again would I dare do such a thing again.

This kid didn't have a Dad that could take care of such things.

I think after counseling they should put this child with a strong Dad character who can rehabilitate this boy with love and the attention he must so desparately be craving.

What a horrible tragedy.  The surviving child should not be punished like an adult.  I'm sure there wasn't intent to kill people.  Or at least, I can't imagine that there was.   I think he should be receiving counseling and get a fresh start.  No one should throw a ten year old away.

Ah, punishment. I'm betting that most people who understands that they were responsible for so much loss, is as punished as they can get.

That's just it.  How can a 10 year old need his "life turned around?"  Ten years old for most kids is fifth grade.  Fifth Grad.  Blows my mind.

I thought I was Pinky Tuskadarow (from Happy Days) in 5th grade.  I understood death, but kinda thought it wouldn't ever touch me.

I don't think he should be tried for his life.  I think it was an accident and even if it wasn't he is ten years old.  What are the odds the kid will make it 20?  30?  At some point without a strong network (and I get the idea from the paper there isn't a strong one around him) the guilt will over ride him.  Or he will become a serial killer.

Wow.

You are so fortunate it didn't get out of control.  Fire seems to be a draw for kids, even though they know it hurts.  I wonder why.

Very well said.  I couldn't agree more.

The single mom who lost her 3 kids has left.  No one knows where she went, but the guy in the paper said he didn't have a lot of hope for her "making it" on her own.  Not sure what that means exactly...

Yeah.  Knowing he killed his own mother and sister, not to mention the three playmates next door.

Is it even possible to ever get back from that?  Doesn't the knowledge itself warp the personality to such a degree that there is no escape?

I feel nauseous every time I see stories about sending this kid away for life.

I know my morning is ruined when I pick the paper up and something about this story screams from the front page.

For some reason, stories like this, and mom's killing their kids...just hit me like a punch in the gut. I can't just shake them off.

There's another that just happened today. A mom and I think 4 kids are found dead in their home. They're out looking for Dad. Should be on tonight's news.

Will it ever end?

The story would not have caught your attention is the threat of life imprisonment was not a part of the deal. I doubt (seriously doubt) that he will get that, or anything of much substance as he is so young, but the story writers had to sensationalize it.

Yeah, I read about that in the paper. 4 kids and wife killed in Iowa, possible husband's remains in burned up van 9 miles from house.

Sad.

Actually the pictures caught my attention. I don't think you realize how serious they are about charging him. The judge is deciding right now if the ten year old is capable of helping his defense, and if so, then he will be tried and under some new law can be held for life. Something about violent youth offender acts carrying a sentence into adulthood.

If the kid was sentenced to life, at friggin TEN years old, they might as well just execute him. It's cruel and unusual punishment to put a kid in the penal system and raise him up. Imagine from the time you were ten if the only physical contact you ever received was from violence. (I don't see him getting many hugs from the guards.)

Sad.
