***Photos of Skin-Sparing Mastectomy Below Post-Surgery***

It is true.  I bruise easy, and they tend to last a long time.  In fact, it is fairly normal to keep a bruise for 4-5 weeks.  Remember the bruising from the gross 5-day post-op pictures?  (Visual reminder below…)

When my plastic surgeon saw the bruising he told me about this wonderful herb called Arnica Montana (AM).  He encouraged me to take it.  Skeptical, I trudged to GNC, plopped down $8.59 for a box and chewed the first tablet in the parking lot.

I put the AM on the kitchen counter, took one whenever I passed or thought about it.  (Though if I took it according to directions I probably would have healed sooner.)

Holy cow!!  9 days later well, here are the photos, you tell me.

5 Days POST OP  GROSSNESS .............  14 DAYS POST OP/ SEMI-                                                                GROSSNESS  (9 Days on AM)

I also went in for my first fill….which I talked about in the last article.  http://lifehappens.joeuser.com/article/400366/Truthful_Self-Delusion

I snapped a photo of my first day back exercising (the day after my fill, 3 weeks post op…I started working out a week sooner than the PS permitted, and guess he was right about waiting, my entire breast turned bright red for two days!!  So I backed off until Weds this week; the official 4 week mark.)

If someone told me a year ago, I’d be happy to “look even” in a sports bra, well….crazy much?,

I know it’s hard to see, (I had to use a mirror, one hand holding the mirror the other taking the pic…WHAT?  I’m not the most coordinated person on the planet….despite the blurry, I almost look even!!  RIGHT!?!?!  Two more fills and they’ll be equal.)

I never believed boobs mattered.  I mean, I almost didn’t have reconstruction.  What’s the big deal?  I asked myself.  But luckily for me I have a cancer team that all but dragged me into reconstruction.  All men of course  .  But, they said in their experience no woman had ever regretted reconstruction, but many regretted NOT having it.  So I went with their recommendation.

However, when this cancer comes back (I have the Energizer Bunny Type Cancer otherwise known as HER2+++), I may just go breast-less.  Reconstruction is painful, expensive, and time consuming.  I don’t know about doing it AGAIN.  But for now, I’m documenting progress….!!

Wow, that stuff works good. I'm going to recommend it to my clients who bruise easily. You are looking good. I hope you are feeling good.

I feel great Kelly, outside occasional muscle spasms, and aches.  I want to get back into exercising hard before chemo, but my boob turns bright red...it really did freak me out.

The AM is awesome.  The PS said he has clients take it a few days before a nosejob, and there is no bruising at all...that's pretty amazing.

Have you researched how it helps with the bruising?  I am just curious on what it is doing to the blood that causes the bruise.

on Nov 22, 2010

"Arnica stimulates white blood cell activity which consequently leads to the dispersion of congested blood and trapped fluids from the muscles and jointed as well as bruised tissue. It also has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory abilities that help in the reduction of pain and swelling and improve faster wound healing."

That is pretty incredible with the bruising.

And WOW @ your freaking awesome abs.  That is just insane.

I told you to lift that shirt!!!  That is a world class belly, girl.  I have similar bruising problems, mostly because of aspirin and some other meds.  I might have to try that stuff out.  How are you doing with pain and discomfort?  Hope you are feeling well.

I work out at home when I do cardio...so you see what I work out in?  My underwear!! lol

I'm ok.  This expander thing hurts though.  Mostly I think because it isn't solid, there is room for inflation, so my pectoral muscle squeezes down on it (like it did the ribs before) and instead of being solid, it gives...that throws my pecs into serious muscle spasms.

Imagine having a charlie horse several times a day on your right pectoral.  It takes my breath away.  And even though there isn't much difference in the sides...maybe a full cup, my back can certainly tell the difference!!  lol

Listen to me whine!

I'm good.  I'm not taking any pain meds so how bad can it be?

You may not believe this, but they're a little less defined here because I haven't got to work out in almost 4 weeks now!  I had a serious 6 pack before....lol.  But once I start steroids, and hit chemopause....no more flat belly for me!  Oh well.

When you get surgical bruising like that is not always just an ordinary bruise, at least it wasn't for me when I had a hernia repaired on my abdomen. When I woke the staples were all bleeding and that was unusual, but it was also deeply bruised... so much so they called it a hematoma. Really dark blood pooled up in there and it just kept spilling out into all the gauze I had to apply for like a month. Generally when there is heavy bruising it takes a good month, month and a half to heal. Thats what happened when I was bruised up. Glad you are feeling better and in good spirits

I didn't wait the 4 weeks to get busy because I felt so good.  I popped my stitches, so the nipple area has a hole the side of a Q-Tip head now and you can see my pectoral muscle...GROSS.

Also, that allowed bacteria in, so now I have an infection.  I just spent the last 24 hours literally fighting for my life.  They gave me an antibiotic with sulfa in it.  Turns out I'm allergic to sulfa and didn't know it.  It's like the flu x 1000.  And I have to wait for 2 weeks to see if it will cause Stevens-Johnson Syndrome.  Google the photos, you won't eat for days.

So I spent time in the ER today, but we were the only ones there .... and still feel like crap....I'm supposed to start chemo Tuesday.  If this infection doesn't go away, I'm having them remove the expander.  I can deal with reconstructing a boob after treatment...right now I need all my strength.

And baby, that strength is waning.

Sorry to hear you've had a setback and that you were in the ER on Thanksgiving.  Having surgery is a tough thing and it takes time to heal from the trauma. Keep up the strength T.

Ok, hard head, now do what the doc tells ya.  It really sucks to be in an ER, especially when you should be home with family.  Please get better, looking forward to a great Christmas season for ya.

Chemo is postponed until the incision heals or December 7th (next week).  Day 6 of antibiotics and ya know?  My boob feels decent for the first time since surgery 5 weeks ago.  Not the constant throbbing pain....hmmm.

on Nov 30, 2010

Update:  Saw the plastic surgeon and he said the infection is gone!!!  WOO HOO!!!!  And that if I take it easy the hole should be closed, or the first layer of closing, by next week.  Woot.  Double woot.

So I will start chemo on the 7th, 14th at the latest...if er, nothing else happens....

This is the first good news I've had since Septemeber when they officially diagnosed me!!
