Feminist writer Jennifer Baumgardener has created a T-shirt that reads "I was raped" as part of multimedia rape awareness project. Baumgardener aims to force the taboo issue of rape into everyday conversation. Not surprisingly, the T-shirt is causing a fair amount controversy.--Buzzfeed.com

This t-shirt was created by the same woman who made one which said "I had an abortion."

She says it to create awareness...

What do you think?

Would you wear it?  Think its a good idea for a wife, daughter, or girlfriend to wear?

Sounds like an appropriate shirt for tax season.

An excellent observation.

But to the point of Baumgardner, it is going to have the exact opposite effect. Crying wolf does not raise the awareness of wolves, just devalues the message and messenger.

A little equal time on the "I had an Abortion" T-shirt.

As for the "I was Raped" T-shirt, I think it feeds more into the whole victim mentality than raising awareness.

Once again... "victim = respect".

Who says she's crying wolf?

I'm not saying that I think the t-shirt is a good idea, but I think it's a jump to assume that anyone who wears it is lying.

We call these people "attention whores" where I'm from.

Now, getting raped is horrible, don't get me wrong...but some women like to either lie about it or bring it up as some badge of "honor" just to get attention and pity.  Wearing a shirt like this makes me think it's something alone the same line.

Some people are defined by their problems.

Did not say they were. They may all have been raped, or none of them. But it cheapens the impact to make it a madison avenue slogan.

There are 2 points to the boy who cried wolf. one was the lie. The other (and the one I was going for) was the devaluation of the message. Rape is a fact. But yelling it every time a man and woman have sex is devaluing the real crime.

The thing is, I read she wants all women to wear them to get people talking about rape.

I think its inappropriate because it makes the subject the equivalent of a bumper sticker.  You can't give the subject its due most of the time when you read it on a woman's chest.

I wouldn't wear it and I once wore a t-shirt that said, "Yeah, I think you're cute.  But buy your own fu--in drink."  It was actually spelled out, haha.

The thing is, this shirt isn't just for the raped, its for the 'I want to talk about rape'-ers too.

I used to have a favorite tee to wear that read "You're ugly and your mother dresses you funny". It was my favorite to wear out to a bar.

I need to get another one made, along with one that reads "There are 10 kinds of people in the world, those who understand binary and those who don't"

Right now I'm wearing one that reads "Quit yer bitchin, trucking ain't for sissies"

Is JU buggy today or is it just me?

Anyway, on a lighter note, a good comment to this shirt, "Who'd rape YOU?"

hahahahaha
